Connected Libraries offers Code Clubs for children interested in computer coding.
By learning how to code, young people are building digital literacy skills for a changing world. They’re also developing valuable soft skills including logic, creativity, critical thinking, collaboration and communication.
We have coding sessions online and, in the library, so you can choose which suits you.
In 2024 we will be offering Coding in Python, Scratch and Minecraft Education. We will also be offering activities focused on coding for robotics using Sphero.
The sessions in the Code Clubs are sequential and require a commitment from families to attend all the sessions in a term. Each course runs for 1 school term.
Bookings for our Code Clubs open two weeks before the end of each school term and spaces are limited.
Please check the age limits as some coding languages are more suited for older learners. For session times and locations visit our events page.
Please note that sessions do not run during school holidays.
Scratch is a block based coding platform that is great for beginners and visual learners.
Code instructions click together like toy blocks and are colour coded depending on their purpose.
Students can make animations and games by moving pictures called sprites around the screen.

Python is a more complicated text-based coding language.
Students need a firm grasp of spelling and grammar to use Python as it requires them to type out the commands they want the computer to follow.
Python will identify errors or bugs in the code which students will have to figure out.

Minecraft Education allows students to build and solve problems in the familiar virtual world of Minecraft.
Each week students will collaborate to solve puzzles, design builds and work on projects together.
Minecraft Education takes the game world that kids know and love and encourages them to think outside the square.

Learn to Code with Sphero robots in a hands-on learning environment.
Sphero uses a block-based coding language similar to Scratch that allows you full control over the speed and movements of your robot.
Take control of a robot via the iPad app and learn to navigate around the space.

Requirements
Attendees will need to be able to access Zoom for these sessions.
It will be easier for the child if they can see the Zoom session on one device and code on another device.
Children using tablets may find it easier if you can attach a keyboard to the tablet for the session.
Code Club Python and HTML.
These sessions are aimed at children aged 8-14.
Python requires a lot of typing and reading and is recommended for children aged 8+
These sessions will extend coding knowledge which may have been learnt in Scratch sessions or coding at school.
Both Python and HTML will be covered in the sessions.

When: 4pm-5pm weekly on Tuesdays during school term, starting Tuesday 2nd of May.
